40% of Americans will experience sciatica at some point in their life. Sciatica is a condition where the nerves in the lower back become agitated due to inflammation, arthritis, bulging discs, or other problems that cause pain, numbness, and tingling to radiate down one or both legs.
This condition is extremely painful and can leave a person unable to function well or even need the assistance of a cane in order to move around.
If you are one of those people I feel for you, I have been there and there are ways that you can help support your back and relieve your sciatica pain.
In order to support the rest of your body, you need a strong and stable core. Doing simple exercises, stretches, and even yoga can greatly impact the strength of your core.
Repetitive movements can actually weaken our muscles putting more strain on our lower back and cause more sciatic pain. Go for a walk, use pillows differently, carry your bag on a different shoulder or sit in a different position.
Try new things and keep changing up your routine in order to keep yourself young and active both physically and mentally. This one is especially hard because we are creatures of habit. We have the exact way we like to do things and often keep repeating those things year after year.
Breaking up the old patterns and trying something new, like yoga, can make a huge difference.
This one can be another of those bad habits that can add up over time. When we are tired after a long day it is hard to sit up straight, keep our feet on the floor, and make sure our computers and cell phones are at the proper height.
Looking down at our phones causes all kinds of back, neck, and core issues that we need to avoid at all costs. Next time you catch yourself slumping forward take a deep breath and open up your chest. Point the top of your head toward the sky and visualize a rod going down your spine. Also, make sure your shoulders and hips are balanced and equal.
Just remember that sometimes it takes time to build up the muscles for good posture and you may be sore in the beginning.
The best trick I got was from Dr. Sean Roden who recommended that I use one of those exercise balls. When I sit on that ball I have to use good posture in order to stay balanced. It is a quick way to build up the core muscles and the posture muscles all at once.
Stretching is incredibly important for keeping everything loose and prevent over-straining. I have long struggled with lower back issues and another tip that Dr. Sean Roden gave me was to stretch and roll out the hamstring muscles.
When we bend forward our waist can only bend around 60%, so if we need to bend more than that our hips will have to pivot forward in order to compensate for it. If our hamstring muscles on the back of the thigh are tight then we risk overstraining our back. Try massaging, stretching, and use a roller to really take care of your legs so that they can support your back and reduce sciatica.
When we life objects, be it a gallon of water or a large box we have to make sure we are caring for our back. Just by being at the wrong angle when we lift can cause years of damage and can even leave behind scar tissue that is painful and hard to overcome.
Prevention is the key when it comes to lifting. If you are lifting something heavy use a tool or dolly. Make sure you have a solid stance and lift with your legs instead of your back. Do not bend forward at the waist and then pick something up. Even if the object is light it will all add up by the time it gets to your back and you could strain something.
When in doubt, ask for help, many hands makes light work.
One of the biggest things that helped me deal with my constant sciatica pain was de-stressing. I know this sounds unrelated at first but stress causes acidity in the body which leads to inflammation and then more pain.
So one of the best things you can do for your pain is to take a deep breath, practice some meditation, take a nice bubble bath, read a book, learn some tools for managing time and stress, and take care of yourself.
Sometimes we feel like we are carrying the weight of the world on our back and it can actually make our bodies hurt. Take some extra time for yourself and ask for help if you need a break.
If you have to carry a bag or backpack then take some time to lighten your load. Do you need to lug around all of these things?
If you find that you have a lot to carry then try getting a more back friendly bag or backpack. Switch shoulders frequently and even take breaks if you need to in order to give your back a break.
When it comes to supporting your back you have got to make sure you are wearing the right shoes. Getting some arch supports or another shoe insert can also make a huge difference on your back and posture.
Every time you take a step the impact from your foot travels up your leg and right into the base of your spine. When you take the time to get a slightly better quality orthopedic shoe you will notice a big difference in how you feel.
This is also why we need to minimize wearing shoes that do not support our back such as high heels and flip flops. Save those shoes for special occasions and pamper your feet a bit.
Wearing a back brace or abdominal binder can be a good idea especially if you are going to be doing anything physical such as working out in the yard. It can help prevent injury and lend support to your back and joints.
It is important to not wear one of these all the time as it can weaken the muscles. Use it for short periods of time while you work on strengthening your core muscles and then keep it only for big projects such as moving or intense physical labor.
When you are exercising, doing yoga, stretching, or cleaning your house pay attention to your body and listen for pain. Though some amount of muscle soreness is typical after exercise it should go away within a few days.
If there are certain moves that hurt then you may need to do some less intense exercise or adaptation moves in order to support and strengthen your body. There is a reason we feel pain and it is to help us from making a situation worse.
Also, remember that things such as air pressure changes in the weather can also cause joint and nerve flare-ups. During these time periods use extreme caution and go easy on your body so that you don’t accidentally make the issue worse.
If you notice that the pain is persistent and or gets worse then check in with your healthcare provider right away.

To begin, I apologize for the dark nature of today’s email.
However I promise what you’ll discover today will be completely worth it.
Imagine a rotting corpse draped over your body from head to toe…
…suffocating tissue, restricting blood flow, damaging joints and infecting your healthy cells.
Shockingly, that nightmare is a reality for most:
64% of women and 74% of men carry too much body fat according to the National Institutes of Health.
It’s choking their organs, assaulting their metabolism and sucking their energy dry.
But here’s the worst part:
For most, this body fat has become “calorie-resistant”:
It’s completely unaffected by even the strictest diets… and most intense exercises.
This zombie fat is essentially… “dead tissue”.
That’s important for those who have 10, 25 or 50 or more pounds to lose…
AND for those who aren’t technically overweight, but have what’s called “pocket obesity”…
…unsightly patches of fat that cling to specific places, like:
just above your hips, lower belly, where your butt and legs meet… and even arms, neck and face.
However, there’s good news:
Obesity researchers have now discovered a “metabolic jumper cable”:
It jolts dead body fat back to life.
This allows your metabolism to burn it as calories and re-energize your entire body.
First though, here’s the #1 reason why body fat becomes calorie-resistant:
It lacks blood flow. This has 3 effects:
All this means one thing:
Your body can’t transform into energy, the 135,000+ of calories the average person stores as fat!
You become a metabolic zombie: NO energy to think. NO energy to move. NO energy to motivate.
Update: calorie-resistant body fat can be now removed…
The discovery of this “metabolic jumper cable” can now reverse this process:
Not only do those layers of “zombie fat” start coming off, but your entire body just works better.
Plus, as your whole body burns more calories, those patches of pocket obesity whittle away.
This “metabolic jumper cable” isn’t any exercise, machine or pill.
It’s a little-known, calorie-burning hormone we all have… just waiting for the right spark to come alive.
It’s not thyroid, leptin, ghrelin, insulin, adiponectin, HGH or any other “fat loss” hormone you may know.
PS – Studies show that not only can healthy levels of this powerful calorie-burning hormone devour bodyfat and fortify soft muscle, but it can also reduce your risk of diabetes by 53.7%, a heart attack by 83.3% and stroke by 51.4%.

Your eyes are a unique window into health. Yahoo Health has assembled a list of 14 things your eyes can tell you about your entire body. Here are some of them:
Disappearing eyebrows
When the outer third of your eyebrow starts to disappear on its own, this is a common sign of thyroid disease.
A stye that won’t go away
If it doesn’t clear up in three months, or keeps recurring in the same location, it could be a rare cancer called sebaceous gland carcinoma.
Burning eyes, blurry vision while using a computer
This is the result of “computer vision syndrome” (CVS). The eyestrain is partly caused by the lack of contrast on a computer screen, and the extra work involved in focusing on pixels.
A small blind spot in your vision, with shimmering lights or a wavy line
A migraine aura produces this disturbed vision. It may or may not be accompanied by a headache.
Whites of the eye turned yellowish
This is known as jaundice. It appears in either newborns with immature liver function, or adults with problems of the liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts.
Eyes that seem to bulge
The most common cause of protruding eyes is hyperthyroidism, which is overactivity of the thyroid gland.
Sudden double vision, dim vision, or loss of vision
These are the visual warning signs of stroke.
Blurred vision in a diabetic
Diabetics are at increased risk for several eye problems, but the most common is diabetic retinopathy, in which diabetes affects the circulatory system of the eye. It’s the leading cause of blindness in American adults.

U.S. girls are entering puberty at a younger age than in the past. More than 10 percent of white 7-year-old girls have breast changes that signal the start of puberty, according to a study conducted in the mid-2000s. This is up from just 5 percent in the early 1990s.
The average age of a girl’s first period also declined, from an average of 14 or 15 years in the past to about 12 years today.
CNN reported:
“Experts aren’t sure what’s behind the increase in earlier puberty, but it’s likely due to a combination of factors, including the childhood obesity epidemic and substances in the environment.
Early puberty in girls is a growing public health concern because studies have shown that girls who start puberty earlier are more likely to develop breast and uterine cancer later in life …
Early development in girls has been linked with poor self-esteem, eating disorders, and depression, as well as cigarette and alcohol use and earlier sexual activity.”
As for what’s causing the increasing in early puberty, chemicals in the environment, obesity, and above-average weight gain during infancy are all being considered as possible factors.
You’re hearing quite a bit about precocious puberty these days, and I believe the data is indicative of a public health disaster yet to come.
Why?
Because the earlier you enter puberty, the longer you’re exposed to elevated levels of the female hormone estrogen, which is a risk factor for certain cancers such as breast cancer. Time will tell whether or not estrogen-related cancer rates will rise dramatically as the current generation of youngsters enters adulthood and middle age, but there’s certainly that risk.
The study published in Pediatrics at the beginning of this month compared results from two previous studies that used breast development to gauge the beginning of puberty. One was conducted in the early 1990s and the other about five years ago.. In that time span, the rate of white 7-year-old girls entering puberty doubled, from five percent to more than 10 percent.
Black and Hispanic girls are, on average, maturing at an even faster rate, with nearly 25 percent of black girls and 15 percent of Hispanic girls entering puberty by age seven!
The average age of the first period has declined as well. In the 19th century the onset of menstruation occurred around the age of 15. Now the average age of the first period is around 12.
There’s no denying that something odd is afoot. The question is, will our government and health agencies do anything about it? So far, efforts to reduce the public’s exposure to the most obvious contributors have been successfully suppressed by industry interests…
Scientists have brought forth a number of potential explanations, and in all likelihood it’s a combination of factors, such as:
- Hormones in food
- Pesticides in produce
- Obesity (which exposes girls to more estrogen because estrogen is stored in fat tissue)
- Phthalates in plastics and cosmetics
It’s now a well-established fact that commonly used plastic chemicals, such as bisphenol A and phthalates, disrupt the human endocrine-system and affect your hormones, which control development and function in your body.
There’s also mounting evidence that these chemicals can cause developmental harm in fetuses and children, either through active exposure during pregnancy and/or while nursing, or due to the preexisting toxic load of the mother.
Unfortunately, it’s near impossible to actually study and test these factors because we’re surrounded by so many estrogen-like chemicals, there are virtually no ‘clean’ control populations with which to compare!
It is truly a sad testament to the level of chronic toxicity we humans now live in.
However, although we may not be able to determine the exact extent of damage caused by each individual factor, you can protect your health, and the health of your family, by paying closer attention to your lifestyle choices in general.
Obesity, hormones and pesticide residues in your food, and precocious puberty can be viewed as a linked triad.
Overweight children have elevated levels of insulin, an increased ability to convert hormones into estrogen, and an increased ability to store environmental toxins, all of which may contribute to early puberty. But obesity is not a cause of early puberty in and of itself.
It is, however, directly linked to diet, and the primary reason why diet may be a driving factor behind the early puberty phenomenon is the excessive use of hormones and other estrogen-mimicking chemicals in livestock and dairy production.
The US FDA currently allows six different kinds of steroid hormones to be used in food production.
- Estradiol — natural female sex hormone
- Progesterone — natural female sex hormone
- Testosterone – natural male sex hormone
- Zeranol – synthetic growth promoter
- Trenbolone acetate– synthetic growth promoter
- Melengestrol acetate– synthetic growth promoter
Federal regulations allow these to be used to ‘beef up’ cattle and sheep, but not poultry or pigs.
In addition to these types of growth hormones, most conventional meats are also heavily contaminated with pesticides, courtesy of the cattle’s grain- and corn-based diet.
This is why I only promote eating organically raised and grass-fed meats.
Despite the difficulty testing the impact of factors such as hormones in food on precocious puberty, studies have been able to discern a distinct dose relationship.
A recent study published in the journal Public Health Nutrition, for example, found that 49 percent of girls who ate meat 12 times a week at the age of 7 had reached puberty by the age of 12 1/2, compared with 35 percent of those who ate meat four times a week or less.
This at least will give you an inkling of how hormone-laced meat alone can alter your child’s development.
But meat is not the only food group capable of wreaking havoc on your child’s delicate hormonal balance.
Dairy is another major source.
The genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST) is permitted to be used on dairy cows to increase milk production, despite the fact that rBGH-containing milk contains high levels of a natural growth factor (IGF-1), which has also been incriminated as a major cause of breast, colon, and prostate cancers.
Unfortunately, labeling is not required by law. Some brands will state that their milk is “rBGH-free” however, and organic dairies also do not use rBGH. Either of these are certainly preferable to milk that contains this dangerous hormone, but I still don’t recommend drinking any kind of pasteurized milk, organic or otherwise.
You can avoid both the risks of rBGH and pasteurization by only drinking raw milk, preferably from a trusted local farmer. This is really the only milk worth drinking if you want to protect your health and certainly that of your growing children.
I’m talking about unfermented soy in its many varieties.
Yes, this so-called “health food” is anything but healthy, especially for infants and children. Sadly, some misinformed moms feed their vulnerable babies soy infant formula, which exposes their child to the equivalent of five birth control pills’ worth of estrogen every day!
It’s also important for pregnant women to avoid eating non-fermented soy, as a high estrogenic environment in utero may increase their child’s subsequent breast cancer risk.
Also keep in mind that soy is present in virtually every processed food and that over 95 percent of soy is GMO, which has its own set of health risks.
Americans are consuming soy in unprecedented quantities. Limiting or eliminating processed foods from your family’s diet would clearly be one of the best health investments you could ever make, for a number of reasons besides reducing your GMO soy intake.
We now know that plastics contain a number of estrogen-mimicking chemicals that easily leach out, contaminating everything it touches, such as food and beverages.
Two of the most studied chemical types in this group are bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which could be viewed as the yin and yang of harmful plastic chemicals.
BPA acts as a synthetic estrogen (female hormone) while phthalates have increasingly become associated with reduced testosterone (male hormone) in both babies and adults, along with developmental changes in the male brain, genital defects, and metabolic abnormalities.
BPA is typically found in more rigid plastic products and containers (as well as the lining of cans), while phthalates are a typical ingredient in softer, more pliable plastics.
These two are some of the most pervasive ‘gender-bender’ chemicals we know of. BPA, for example, has been detected in the umbilical cord blood of 90 percent of newborn infants tested.
If you look around your house, you’re likely to find either or both of these chemicals in abundance, unless you’ve gone really “green.”
Avoiding BPA-containing plastic products is an important step to limit your BPA exposure. Remember, this chemical is typically found in food and beverage containers, and has been shown to leech into whatever food or beverage it comes in contact with. Ridding your household of these items is therefore especially important if you’re pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or have young children.
For more information about BPA and tips on how to avoid it, please review this previous article.
Avoiding phthalates is a bit trickier as these chemicals can be found in an even more diverse array of products – everything from toys, to floors, detergents, personal care products and cosmetics, just to name a few.
For more on phthalates and potential sources to avoid, please see this link.
There are about 75,000 chemicals regularly manufactured and imported by U.S. industries – the vast majority of which have never been tested for safety. Rather than compile an endless list of what you should avoid, it’s far easier to focus on what to do to minimize your exposure.
Here are 11 measures you can implement right away to protect yourself and your children from common toxic substances that could cause precocious puberty and long-term health problems:
- As much as possible, buy and eat organic produce and free-range, organic meats to reduce your exposure to added hormones, pesticides and fertilizers.
- Eat mostly raw, fresh foods. Processed, prepackaged foods (of all kinds) are a major source of soy and chemicals such as BPA and phthalates.
- Store your food and beverages in glass rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap and canned foods (which are often lined with BPA-containing liners).
- Use glass baby bottles and BPA-free sippy cups for your little ones.
- Make sure your baby’s toys are BPA-free, such as pacifiers, teething rings and anything your child may be prone to suck on.
- Only use natural cleaning products in your home to avoid phthalates.
- Switch over to natural brands of toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. The Environmental Working Group has a great safety guide to help you find personal care products that are free of phthalates and other potentially dangerous chemicals.
- Avoid using artificial air fresheners, dryer sheets, fabric softeners or other synthetic fragrances, many of which can also disrupt your hormone balance.
- Replace your Teflon pots and pans with ceramic or glass cookware. Teflon contains PFOA, which has been linked to thyroid disease.
- When redoing your home, look for “green,” toxin-free alternatives in lieu of regular paint and vinyl floor coverings.
- Replace your vinyl shower curtain with one made of fabric.
Theo Colburn’s book Our Stolen Future is a great source for further investigation as it identifies the numerous ways in which environmental pollutants are disrupting human reproductive patterns. I believe it is one of the best resources on this topic and highly recommend it.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight US women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. This staggering stat could equal two members of your soccer team, three women in your yoga class, or five faces you see in a busy sushi joint. Fortunately, there are several natural ways to potentially lower your breast cancer risk.
The most common way that conventional doctors look for breast cancer in women is to identify lumps in the breast. They most often do this with mammogram x-rays. This offer physicians a basic roadmap for navigating the terrain of breast tissue, allowing them to pinpoint any lumps, masses, or other questionable abnormalities that might point to a malignancy. Women are normally encouraged to get mammogram testing every one or two years as they enter later adulthood, as a measure to detect breast cancer as early as possible.
But mammograms can be a potential cause of cancer due to the ionizing radiation they send into breast tissue. They also aren’t accurate 100 percent of the time, despite what you may have been told. Lumps and masses in breast tissue can be either benign (harmless) or malignant (harmful), and mammograms don’t differentiate between the two. This often leads to false diagnoses and unnecessary treatments with chemotherapy and radiation.
Indeed, according to top cancer expert Dr. Samuel Epstein, “The premenopausal breast is highly sensitive to radiation, each 1 rad exposure increasing breast cancer risk by about 1 percent, with a cumulative 10 percent increased risk for each breast over a decade’s screening.”
More importantly, mammograms an almost negligible ability to prevent cancer deaths, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. A September 2010 study found that mammograms only reduced cancer death rates by .4 deaths for every 1,000 women who received annual testing for 10 years, which means that only 1 breast cancer death was averted per 2,500 women.
What most doctors won’t tell you, however, is there’s a safer, far more accurate alternative. The technology, called thermography, does not rely on radiation, but instead scans for heat levels in the body to detect inflammation. It’s so safe in fact that it poses no risks even to pregnant and nursing women. Cancerous and pre-cancerous cells are normally characterized with inflammation first before any growth visible on by mammography, and so thermograms are able to detect cancer years earlier than any other method.
A study conducted on women who received regular thermogram screenings over a ten year period found that an abnormal thermogram scan was ten times more reliable as a risk measure for breast cancer than family medical history. In addition, it also found that thermography was the first detector of potential cancer for 60% of the women who developed it.
According to Dr. Phlip Getson, who has used medical thermography since 1982, “Since thermal imaging detects changes at the cellular level, studies suggest that this test can detect activity 8 to 10 years before any other test. This makes it unique in that it affords us the opportunity to view changes before the actual formation of the tumor. Studies have shown that by the time a tumor has grown to sufficient size to be detectable by physical examination or mammography, it has in fact been growing for about seven years achieving more than 25 doublings of the malignant cell colony. At 90 days there are two cells, at one year there are 16 cells, and at five years there are 1,048,576 cells—an amount that is still undetectable by a mammogram.”
Not only are thermograms better early predictors, they are far less likely to produce false positives, which mammograms are somewhat known for. The false positive rate for mammograms is 6%, which means it’s a fairly regular occurrence, and is probable to occur at least once for the majority of women who undergo annual or biannual screenings. The result can be additional mammograms, meaning even more heavy radiation exposure, and worse, needless operations.
Thermography is safe, accurate, and non-invasive. You can usually find one thermography testing center in most major cities, and while it’s not typically covered by insurance, it’s relatively inexpensive—the average screening costs only $250. For any woman, or man, at any age, an annual thermography screening is the ultimate check-up tool.

In America, almost one in three adults are living with high blood pressure, that’s why the topic of dietary recommendations for high blood pressure is becoming more and more popular these days. What causes high blood pressure? Normally not consuming enough vegetables and fruits can result in a high sodium intake and low potassium intake, which can contribute to developing high blood pressure. So with high blood pressure, you are recommended to have a diet low in sodium and fat, avoid these foods:
Pickles are super low in calories and fat, and are also high in vitamin K, which helps your blood clot after the injury, that’s great. But they are loaded with sodium, one medium pickle provides more than 570mg of sodium, that’s more than 1/3 of the daily recommended needs. So if you’re with high blood pressure, limit your pickle intake.
Sauerkraut is with several health benefits, including providing vitamin C and K, iron and a good amount of fiber, and it also boosts your immune system, but you should limit the amount you eat, or choose low-sodium brands, as a half cup of it has more than 460 mg of sodium, 19% of your recommended daily intake.
Bacon is not only delicious, it’s also like other pork products, contains B-vitamins (vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B12), vitamin D as well as the minerals zinc, iron and magnesium, which are all essential for a positive health body. But why most people feel afraid to eat it? As it’s super high in sodium, three slices contain around 270 mg of sodium and 4.5 grams of fat, so it’s wise to try turkey bacon for lower sodium intake instead of the salty&fatty pork bacon.
When you’re trying to build muscle, whole milk is your best choice, it provides more fat than you need, a one cup serving of whole milk contains 8 grams of fat. While if you are living with high blood pressure, try using 2% milk, or even better-skim milk, as the saturated fats whole milk contains are bad for you and may lead to heart disease.
People like donuts, for its sweet taste, but they are not good for your health. A single donut can provide more than 300 calories and 12 grams of fat, as they’re fried, means you’re getting lots of saturated and trans fat, which can increase your risk of heart disease.
Ramen noodles are popular among college students all over the world, as they’re inexpensive and so convenient. However, it’s not a healthy choice as they’re lack of nutrients and with lots of unhealthy components. One package of ramen provides 14 grams of fat, including 6 grams of saturated fat, and 1731 grams of sodium, more than 70% of the recommended daily needs! In fact, the flavor packet contains most of the sodium, so to reduce sodium intake, it’s better to not add the flavor packet.
Drinking too much alcohol may raise your blood pressure to unhealthy levels, and alcohol can damage the walls of blood vessels. For people with high blood pressure, avoid alcohol totally or drink in moderation. Moderate drinking is generally considered to be:
A drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.
If you have high blood pressure, limit eating these above foods and focusing on low-sodium foods can help. Some good choices are: potassium-rich bananas, salt-free seasonings, potassium-packed white potatoes, fresh fish, nutrient-packed lima beans, iron-rich spinach, omega-3 fatty acids-rich flaxseed.

Karan Johar shows us the journey of a man learning about love, friendship, and being a borderline abusive crybaby.
After all the controversy, Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, finally released this past weekend to mixed reviews. The movie is undeniably great looking, with talented actors such as Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma (playing leads Ayan and Alizeh) leading the show. The story, however, is more than a wee bit problematic, and not just because of how much it resembles literally every film Kapoor has starred in since his debut. (How many years can you keep coming of age, bro?)

Weißt du was?

Matt told BuzzFeed, "The video is from our work party. I made it using plywood, foam, vinyl, and leather, with a pulley system that lifts the head piece when I'm standing. I'm an engineer and I love making goofy costumes."
