The Starter Guide to Growing Your Own Vegetables

Are you growing sick of eating processed meals and want to go on a health kick? Maybe you want to start a new hobby? Or perhaps you don’t want to go to the shop to purchase prepackaged vegetables? Well, there are numerous reasons as to why you would want to grow your own vegetables, and all of them are generally in a positive light.

With that said, you can’t just jump into harvesting your own veg without a little big knowledge and preparation beforehand. Read on for a quick starter guide on how to grow your own veg.

Decide what veg you will grow

First of all, you need to choose a vegetable to grow. This is an obvious step, but there are things to take into consideration with this aspect – and it doesn’t just involve picking your favorite veg!

For instance, aspects such as temperature, sun light regularity, the seasons, and so on will dictate what you can and can’t grow. Although as a beginner, it is recommended that you stick with easy to grow vegetables like lettuces and tomatoes.

Choose your location

This means which patch of your garden you will dedicate to your new veg growing venture. Of course the larger the garden, the more space you have to play with. In the end, the biggest deciding factor in choosing a patch of your garden is dictated by its position in relation to the sun. That’s because you should plant your vegetables in the sunniest spot of the garden.

Another thing to take into account is the quality and depth of the soil.

No outdoor space? Don’t worry!

If you live in an apartment complex, you might think that growing your own vegetables is futile. However, this is simply not the case. While a backyard is beneficial in that it supplies plenty of space, you can still plant your produce and place them on your apartment’s balcony. Obviously, you have to take into account potentially windy conditions when doing this, but it should provide a plentiful harvest at the end of the day. If you don’t have a balcony, however, your options are limited.

To counter this issue, there has been a growing trend of budding growers utilizing LED grow lights. These grow lights – which uses hydroponic instead of soil-based plants – allow your veg to prosper within the confines of your home, to the point where your veg will grow 30-50% faster and be healthier overall.

The end product

Assuming you have had a successful harvest, it is time to decide what to do with your newfound wealth of vegetables! The usual procedure at this point would be to enjoy the veg yourself, and also give some to family and friends. However, if you have an entrepreneurial mindset, don’t dismiss the idea of selling your freshly grown veg. For instance, a local café might be happy to take you on as a small-scale supplier for them – so not only do you get a hobby to enjoy, but you can also profit financially!
