Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is not a single disease, it is a mix of many symptoms including changes in bowel habits and stomach pain. You may experience constipation or diarrhea, bloating, gas, cramping and pain for a long period of time. Although it is not life-threatening, it can affect your lifestyle and quality of life. It can also be a long-lasting health issue and may force you to change your work setting or work hours. Irritable bowel syndrome does not increase the risk of other colon disorders like Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis but chronic fatigue syndrome and depression are common among IBS patients. Here are some symptoms and signs of IBS you should be aware of.
1. Abdominal pain
You may experience abdominal pain due to Irritable bowel syndrome. It is usually widespread and not restricted to a specific region. Cramping of the large and small intestine is the reason for the stomach pain. You may experience abdominal pain after having a meal and the pain usually subsides after passing gas or passage of stool. The pain is never sharp or severe.
2. Constipation
Constipation is another sign of IBS and it lasts for days. Constipation is followed by a period of diarrhea. The condition worsens with anxiety and stress. Practicing yoga, therapy or exercising can improve IBS symptoms. It is advisable to consult your doctor if you are experiencing severe constipation and diarrhea.
3. Presence of mucus in stool
Presence of mucus in stool is common in IBS patients. Mucus production is common but it increases in those suffering from IBS. However, blood is not common in IBS. So, talk to your doctor if you find blood in your stool.

4. Bloating
Bloating is swelling due to gas accumulation and IBS can lead to abdominal bloating. Swelling of stomach may cause pain and tightening. Sometimes, bloating is accompanied by stomach growling. In IBS, the bacteria that are normally present in your gut become imbalanced and cause bloating.
5. Symptoms occur during the day
The symptoms of Irritable bowel syndrome happen during the day time as you are stressed during the day and IBS symptoms worsen with stress. The conditions are at its worse at the end of the day but it usually subsides at night as you are not under any stress at night.
