Street clashes erupted on Monday in the US city of Baltimore after the funeral of a black man who died in custody, as protesters pelted police with stones and bottles.
At least one officer was seen being taken away wounded as loose groups of mainly African American protesters faced baton-wielding police with shields and wearing riot helmets.
"The group is refusing to follow our dispersal orders. Several of our officers have been injured," Baltimore Police said on Twitter.
Trouble broke out after the funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of severe spinal injuries on April 19, a week after he was arrested and detained in Baltimore, north of Washington.
His death sparked heated demonstrations over the weekend in the blue-collar port city, and there had already been dozens of arrests and half a dozen police injuries before the latest unrest.
State troopers arrived in armored vans to back up the Baltimore police department, and classes at a local university were suspended amid rumors of more serious violence to come.
Earlier, police had issued a statement warning of reports that rival armed gangs had agreed a truce in order to better target officers.
